Ephesians 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children…
This is the sixth in the ‘Be Ye Therefore’ series. The term Christian means literally, to be like Christ. At Antioch they were first called Christians meaning ‘little Christs’. They were identified with and their way was identical to Christ.
Become As Little Children
Jesus in Matthew 18:3 told His followers that they must be converted and “become as little children”, humble and trusting in the Lord for not only salvation but also the daily providential care of the Father. Remember when we were children? I never worried where my next meal was coming from. I didn’t worry about how the light bill would get paid. I know my Dad would take care of our family. That is the same trust God wants from His children. Paul tells us to follow, some say imitate or strive to be like, our heavenly Father. When I was a child, I wanted to be like my Dad. I still do. I remember when he would take me and my siblings walking in the woods. He seemed to be able to walk so quietly, hardly disturbing the forest floor. I would try to walk in his footsteps because I wanted to be able to walk like that.
To Follow the Master
Peter was literally following behind Christ one day as He walked with His disciples. And as He was walking, Jesus told His followers how He must go to Jerusalem, suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. The bible says at this point that “Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.” The moment Peter supposed to rebuke the Lord, he left following and tried to lead. It was at this point that Christ turned to this man who was already literally following along behind Him and said, “Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.” (Matthew 16:21-23 KJV) Peter was following Christ in physical walk at that point but not the spiritual walk. He had allowed his flesh to have control. Why did Christ say, ‘get behind me’ to a man who was already right behind Him? Because when Peter thought to counsel God, he was acting like Satan did when he said in Isaiah 14, “I will be like the most high.”
Church to be a follower of God is to remember that He is the pilot of our ship. We are not a co-pilot. He is Lord of all or none in our lives. If He does not have rule of your heart and life completely He is not your Lord. We may not always understand His plan but we must always trust it. Remember that you not only represent this church, but the very God of heaven and this universe. We should also strive to be more like our Father. To earnestly desire to walk in His footsteps and become more like Him in His character. To be humble and recognize that He will provide and care for us for He is Jehovah Jireh. Little children (as John the apostle referred to us) Be Ye Therefore Followers of God, as dear children…
